Junior Scientists at the 2nd JS Conference in Vienna

The 2nd Joint Science Conference took place in Vienna on May 22-24, 2016 gathering representatives of national academies of sciences and arts, rectors’ conferences, distinguished scientists, as well as junior scientists and representatives of the European Commission and the Regional Cooperation Council.

PERFORM was represented by its Manager, Mr Martin Dietz.

Junior scientists were able to participate in the Conference for the first time on the initiative of PERFORM and supported by the German and Austrian Academies of Sciences. In preparation of the Conference, PERFORM facilitated a process whereby young researchers from Western Balkan countries developed an Opinion Paper on their position in national science systems and included recommendations how to enable young people to develop as researchers. The paper was presented at the Conference and discussed.
The Conference discussed three levels/areas of action: systemic and institutional change in the Western Balkans science systems, quality assurance in higher education, research and innovation in compliance with standards of the European Research Area as well as the design of measures to implement improvements and new approaches.
A final statement from the Conference will be brought forward to the next Summit Meeting of the Heads of States that will take place in Paris in July 2016.
